The original tree is an Avocado tree in south Florida. Growing around it is a Strangler Fig. The Strangler Fig starts from a fig seed left in the trees branches by birds. The fig grows as an epiphyte, without soil, until it's roots finally reach the ground. At that point, it begins to grow around the original tree, eventually enclosing and killing it.
