This cabbage from our friends garden has leaves similar to the broccoli that I am growing. How closely related are they?

They are both the same species! Brassica oleracea. In fact, cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, collard greens, and kale are all the same species. They have been cultivated into different varieties, just as dogs have been bred into chihuahuas and great danes.
