I was very surprised to see this bird in the garden of our new home in Utah. Why?

Answer:

This is a Northern Flicker. There are two major subspecies, the Yellow-Shafted Northern Flicker and the Red-Shafted Northern Flicker. Yellow-Shafted Northern Flickers are usually found east of the Rockies, while Red-Shafted Northern Flickers are found west of the Rockies. Their names come from the color of their feather shafts, but you can also identify the males by their malar stripe, the mustache-like stripe on its face. Yellow-Shafted Northern Flickers have a black malar stripe while Red-Shafted Northern Flickers have red malar stripes. This is a Yellow-Shafted Northern Flicker, and it a long way from its normal territory.
