Why are marksmen sometimes called "snipers?"
Answer:
This bird is a Snipe. When it is startled, it flies in a very erratic path, speeding up and slowing down. That makes it very difficult to shoot, so only the best shots had a chance. The folks that were that good with a rifle were called "snipers."
