Is it true that you can tell which way is north by looking at the moss on trees?

Answer:

Moss grows better in shade, so it tends to grow on the shady side of the tree trunk. In the northern hemisphere, the north side of a solitary tree gets less sunlight, but in a forest, all sides of the trees are shady. With a clearing in the forest, the side away from the clearing will have more moss, as it gets less direct sunlight. That means that on the south side of the clearing, the south side of the trees will have more moss because the north side is towards the open area of sunlight. In this photo, the mossy side faces east, away from the tennis courts of our neighborhood park.
