After releasing their spores, mushrooms shrivel and start to decompose, but is the fungus really dead?

Answer:

The mushroom is the reproductive part of the fungus, in some ways like a flower for a plant. The main part of the fungus is an underground network of white, thread-like structures called hyphae, which make up the mycelium, the "body" of the fungus. That mycelium network can be very large, in some cases more than 2000 acres, making these fungi some of the largest organisms in the world.
