Why did this Pileated Woodpecker make the hole in this tree?
Answer:
While it looks much like a nest (used for raising young), this is a roost hole. Most Pileated Woodpeckers excavate a roost hole to give them a safe place to spend the night. Roost holes usually have more than one entrance, to allow them to escape invading predators. The other opening is on the other side of this tree.
