Like other butterflies, this Gulf Fritillary drinks nectar through a long, straw-like tube. Sometimes that tube gets clogged. How does the butterfly unclog it?
Answer:
The butterfly's proboscis is actually two long pieces that interlock. If the tube becomes clogged, they separate the two pieces and clean them. Then they interlock the pieces again, and are ready for another meal.
