Why is one of these baby birds so much bigger than the other?

Answer:

Birds that nest on the ground, such as chickens, don't start incubating their eggs until they have finished laying them. That way, all of the young hatch at the same time. Birds that nest in trees often start incubating as soon as the first egg is laid, which means that the first egg laid is the first to hatch, giving that baby a head start on eating and growing.
