I usually don't discuss politics here, but this factoid was too fun. What is the political history of this plant?

Answer:

Pokeweed has a long history as a yummy food, as folk medicine, and as a dye or ink. Its tie to politics is through our 11th President, James K. Polk. He was from the South, and although the plant is spelled differently, during his election his supporters wore sprigs of Pokeweed just as later voters would wear campaign buttons.
