If you have a dog, you probably know not to give them chicken bones. Coyotes, foxes, and wolves eat birds frequently. Why don't they get choked on the bones?

Answer:

While we tend to think of bones as solid, they are actually a blend of chemicals, some rigid and some flexible. You may be familiar with that if you have soaked a chicken bone in vinegar to let you tie a knot in it. Cooking removes much of the flexible collagen, making cooked chicken bones brittle. This causes them to break into sharp splinters, which are dangerous to the dog's digestive tract. If the bone has not been cooked, it does not splinter.
