Have you ever heard that owls can turn their head around almost completely backwards? They can, but all birds can. Why do people think this is special for owls?

Answer:

Robins, hawks, and other birds have their eyes on the sides of their heads, so they only have to slightly turn their heads to see behind them. Owls have their eyes on the front of their heads, surrounded by the facial disk of feathers that we talked about recently. To help them see better in dim light, their eyes are so large that there is very little room for muscles, so they can't move their eyes very much. With all of that combined, they can only look forward, so they have to turn their heads almost entirely around to see behind them.
