Why was this fruit so important during the 1940's?

Answer:

Rose hips are the fruit of the rose plant. You don't see them very often because the flowers are usually cut before the fruit can form. Ounce for ounce, they can contain more than 30 times the vitamin C of citrus fruit. During World War II, shipping was cut off, making fresh fruit scarce in England and much of Europe. Rose hips from British gardens provided much needed vitamins.
