Why is temperature important to baby alligators?

Answer:

If alligator eggs are incubated at temperatures less than 86 degrees Farenheit, all of the babies will be female. If they are incubated at temperatures higher than 93 degrees, all of the babies will be males. In between 86 and 93 degrees, the babies will be mixed, with about five females for every male.

Typically, alligator nests in high areas, such as levees are warmer, and produce males. Nests in low marshes are cooler, and produce females.
