Why is lightning so important to trees?

Answer:

Lightning changes the gases in the air into plasma, a state of matter where electrons are stripped off atoms. That lets them recombine into chemicals that would not form otherwise. The nitrogen in the air is changed into nitrogen compounds that plants need to grow.

Lightning also starts forest fires, which burn off underbrush and remove dead trees. This actually keeps the forests healthy.
