I photographed this Bison in Yellowstone National Park. Why is he rolling in the dirt?

Answer:

Rolling in the dust does help them get rid of pests, but for male Bison, there are other reasons too. The dust wallows are part of the competition for dominance. The more dust they stir up, the higher their rank in the herd. The dust wallows also play a part in attracting a mate. The males urinate on the wallow, and the scent makes them more attractive to female bison.
