Why are there two spiders in this web?

Answer:

These are both Banana Spiders. The large one is the female, and the small one is the male. Males will move into a female's web just before her last molt. She will only mate in the 48 hours following her last adult molt. If the food supply is low, or if the male is not quick enough, then he may be eaten by the female.
