What is special about the wings of bumblebees?
Answer:
This one was tricky, because of the myth about bumblebees not being aerodynamic enough to fly. Actually, there are several special things about their wings, but the one that caught me was that they can flap their wings about 200 times per second, which is ten times faster than their nerves can react. How do that do that? Their muscles vibrate strongly back and forth, much like a guitar string. Each nerve impulse to flap the wings actually produces ten flaps as the muscles vibrate back and forth.
