Will a pond work?

Will a pond work? We have a pond in our backyard and will that work to see water creatures. We once saved a snapping turtle from our dogs' pen. He looked like he was having fun when my mom carried him to the pond. My mom didn't know he was a snapping turtle. He swam away. So will a pond work to water creatures? Thanks.
