Hi Mr. Krampf,

I did this experiment recently after I watched the video of it, and filmed myself. I totally tricked some of my friends. My sister prepared the "candle" for me, and we did not have a very good banana. It was too curved, and a little bit soft. We ended up having to carve out the back and balance it in a candle holder with some paper towel to stabilize it. It was still very fun, but I was wondering if there is anything you can use for the candle that will be more reliable?

I've used this before, but with a potato core. A regular apple corer can be used to make a quick, perfectly shaped "candle." The kids LOVE it. I have had a couple of tree nut allergies (students) in the past few years and the oil from the almond make it impossible for me to try it lately. But I have the students write down their observations as I walk around the room with it in a candle holder. They usually write "candle" as an observation and we discuss that that is not an observation, that's an inference. Great!
