I took this photo on the flight home, as we approached the Atlanta Airport. What caused the colors around the shadow of the plane?
Great job! This is indeed a Glory. It looks similar to a rainbow, but forms in a different way. Where a rainbow reflects and refracts the light back towards you, forming an arc, the glory is formed as sunlight hits the tiny droplets in a cloud or fog. The light is scattered, as well as refracted and reflected multiple times. This gives you the colors of a rainbow, but depending on the size and concentration of the droplets, the rings are very close to the center (5 to 20 degrees), instead of 40 to 42 degrees from the center, as they would be with a rainbow.
The center of the glory is directly in line with the Sun and the viewer, so you can tell where I was sitting on the plane by finding the center.

I think the sunlight shone
I think the sunlight shone through the water droplets in the cloud causing the rainbow. Or maybe some sort of gas around the plane made it, not exactly sure.

Dear Mr. Rkrampf,
I think that the mist and water in the cloud created the colors because if the sunlight shown through them, the combination of sunlight through water would created a rainbow. Like, sometimes after it rains, the sun comes back up and sunlight goes through the mist and you see a rainbow in the sky.
I'd like to know if there are any science, chemistry, or cooking books for kids, like a fourth grader or sixth grader. If you do, can you tell me some of them?

A glory from an airplane
Dear Mr. Krampf,
Cool. I think that it is called a glory. You can only see it if you are between the sun and a cloud of water droplets. I learned that all rainbows are circles. You can see a rainbow when you are standing on the ground and the sun is behind you and there are enough rain drops in the air, but you only see half of it because the ground is in the way.

I think a cloud caused the colors around the plane.
