Why do birds spend so much time standing on one leg?
Marvelous! Actually, we do not know the answer. One theory is that it is to control heat loss. A long, bare leg loses a lot more heat that a leg that is tucked up into insulating feathers. Especially for wading birds that spend a lot of time in the water, this heat loss can be a big problem. It means that they must have a lot more food to supply the extra energy. Reducing the heat loss would mean that the bird could survive on less food. Recent studies have shown that as the temperature increases, birds are more likely to stand on both legs. As it gets colder, they are more likely to stand on one leg.
Another theory is that birds don't go fully asleep. We know that for dolphins and ducks, one half of the brain sleeps while the other half remains awake. The same may be true for other birds. The half of the brain that stays awake would maintain the balance on one leg, while the other leg rested.
This is one of the aspects of science that I really like. It is wonderful that there are still so many mysteries left for us to explore.

Why do birds spend so much time standing on one leg?
Could it be that they are resting there leg.
i think they try to stretch
i think they try to stretch there leg. i have seen them switch legs, so they might be stretching.
i may be wrong. :)

BECAUSE!
Why do birds spend so much time standing on one leg?
Dear Mr Krampf,
I found out that birds stand on one leg because they are warming up the other leg. When the other leg is cold they switch.

standing on one leg
According to one site we found, birds stand on one leg for at least three reasons. 1. To keep heat energy in--one leg gives off less heat than 2 legs 2. To let the tucked up leg dry off and 3. Their shadow, when standing on only one leg, looks more like a plant or tree and may help keep from scaring away prey.
How is your trip going?? We hope you are having a great time.

I am having a marvelous time. The Technorama Science Center is marvelous. So is Swiss ice cream. With both, I am having a very wonder-filled trip.

I think the reason birds spend so much time standing on one leg is to save body heat. I always think it is weird when my chicken does it. Especially when it tucks its head into its fur while standing on one leg. If you noticed when you put socks on you heat up very fast. I think when they put their foot in their fur they are trying to keep warm, especially in the winter.

Dear Mr. Rkrampf,
I think that birds spend so much time standing on one leg because they need to stretch it or it helps them concentrate while hunting for food.
Are you a scientist that studies nature or what kind of scientist are you? How can the owl twist its' neck all the way around without hurting their neck like us humans? Does every bird live on a tree or a the roof?
Sincerely,
Jessica
Hi Jessica
Hmm. What kind of scientist am I? Well, I studied geology in college, and got my first job as a collections geologist at the museum in Memphis, Tennessee. Since then, I have studied and taught geology, biology, chemistry, and physics.
As for owls, all birds can turn their heads around backwards. They have more vertebrae in their necks that we do, so they can turn their heads farther.
No, not all birds live in trees or on the roof. Some birds, like the Burrowing Owl, live in holes in the ground. Others sleep while floating on the water, or hiding in the grass. Some, like penguins, can even live in the snow and ice.
