In Florida, this turtle is very important. Why?
Fantastic! This is a Gopher Tortoise, and many animals depend on it. Gopher Tortoises dig burrows, and since they move around, they dig quite a few holes. Many creatures live in abandoned tortoise holes, and some actually move in and live with the tortoise. There are over 350 species that use Gopher Tortoise burrows. When so many organisms depend on one species, it is called a keystone species. In a stone arch, the stone at the top is the keystone. Without the keystone, the arch would collapse, and the same is true for a keystone species in the food web. If the Gopher Tortoise became extinct, many species would suffer.

my tortoise
my tortoise loves to dig. i take her out side on a small lot i have next door to me. i let her dig while checking on her once in a while. i am not sure if i should let her dig in the same hole everytime because i might not be able to get her out. any ideas? (she is a texas tortoise)
Burrows
This turtle is important because other small animals including Mice, poisonous and non-poisonous Snakes,Other turtles and tortoises, and even some birds like the Scrub Jay and Burrowing owl, and lots more animals, some of which are endangered, call this turtle's burrow their home. Also this turtle's name is Gopher tortoise.

Is it because they are in decline and need protecting?
Hi Morgan
I have not forgotten you. I am in Switzerland this week, helping their science center with a new science program on lightning, so it may take me a bit longer to answer questions for a few days. Check yesterday's photo for your answers there.
These turtles are not afraid of people, so you can get quite close.
For how long it would take to go to Mars and back, a lot would depend on the time of year. Because Mars orbits the Sun at a different speed from Earth, sometimes it is closer and sometimes it is farther away. It would also depend on the speed of the rocket. Most estimates that I found day about 260 days to get from Earth to Mars, when Mars is at its closest point.

Dear Mr.Kramf,
Check yesterdays science photo i have a few questions on that one.I think the turtle is special because it's an indagered tipe of turtle, or it's the states turtle, or it may have a special tipe of shell.
Check yesterdays please!!!!!!!!!!!How did you get this photo so close up? What tipe of turtle is it? And one last question how long would it take for a rocket to go to mars and back to earth?
Your Admier,
Morgan
