I found this tiny (1 1/2 inch) skeleton in the garden this morning. What is it from?
Marvelous! This is the skeleton of a Cricket Frog. Cricket Frogs are small. This one was full grown. Still, for their size, they are incredibly loud, making a sound that reminds you of someone clicking two glass marbles together. When they are alive, they are easily identified by the dark triangle on the top of their head.
It was skeletonized by our garden ants. If you look closely at the photo, you can see some ants looking for the last few bites.

Question About Skull

Many birds of prey (hawks and owls) will tear their food apart, and drop pieces when they have finished with them. If the skull was under a tree, it is very likely a perching spot for a hawk or owl. Keep your eyes open, and you will probably see it.
Frog Skeleton
Hi Mr. Krampf,
As we start another fasinating year in Science my students have a question relating to this Photo of the Day. They want to know how long it took the ants to consume the frog's flesh?
Thanks.
