What is so special about this shadow?

OK, this was a hard one. This is a photo that was taken during a partial eclipse. I made four small holes in a sheet of cardboard, and let the sun shine through them. Each pinhole acted like a lens, focusing the sun's image on the side of my truck. The dark area in the lower, left side of each circle of light is the Moon moving in front of the Sun.

Response from Mrs. Webber's class

Hello Mr. Krampf,

This was a very difficult picture for us to figure out! We are not quite sure what the shadow is, let a lone why it is special. Does this shadow occur in nature or did you make it? Please inform us as to what this is and why it is special!

I think the mirror is curved making the object (building?) look closer. It also looks similar to a chair. The mirror looks like one that would be on a car. I think it is special because there are 4 white holes on it.

Looking at your last photo, how fast can lightening strike?
Also, looking at the Giraffe what are the things that look like horns?

Thank you,
Jessica

Hi Jessica

A lightning bolt can travel up to 130,000 miles per hour.

The things on a giraffe that look like horns are called ossicones. They are lumps of bone that are part of the skull. The males use them to playfully wrestle with each other.

Morgan from Ms.Webber's Class

I don't know what's so special about the shadow. This is a really hard one. Well my guess is that something might be reflecting wrong on it because its in the wrong place with the sun, or you might be taking pictures of an eclipse.

I saw this show last night and it showed salt water crocodiles and it looked like they were traveling really fast. Where can you locate them? Why do your finger nails turn white when you press down on them? I watched the changing the speed of light video and it was great!!!!!!!!!

Your admirer,
Morgan

Hi Morgan

Salt water crocodiles are found many places around the world, including the southern tip of Florida.

Your fingernails turn white when you press down because you are forcing some of the blood out of the tiny blood vessels underneath the nail. That removes the pink/red color, letting you see the white color of the fingernail.
