What is the purpose of those things that look like trash cans that hang on power poles?
Excellent! The device is a step down transformer, converting the high voltage electricity from the wires into low voltage power for our homes. Because the high voltage feeds in from the lines, occasionally a squirrel will touch both wires, producing a loud bang, a loss of electrical power, and little bits of fried squirrel to come floating down to the ground.

Trash cans?! Those are not trash cans, they are protective coverings for very powerful high voltage wires. They are kept inside of the container so birds are not electrocuted and the power does not go out. This is our theory of why those "trash cans" are covering the wires.

To Mr. Krampf: I think it is a transformer which lowers the voltage of the electricity passing by through the wires, and to Vicky: What do you mean it blows people up?

Although this one is pretty big, there are several transformers that are smaller that we pass by in our everyday life. This one looks like a single phase.

This is a pole-mounted transformer and they reduced the electricity or your house would be fried. (Abbie)
Regular power lines have 7200-14400 volts and this must be reduced to 240/120 volts that we use in our homes.

Power Pole Canisters
I Believe they are part of the generators the make the electric current flow. If there was only one for a whole long stretch of road the current would be too weak I would think. So each of those helps generate more power.
