This is a wider shot of the Calico Crab shell. These crabs are adapted to live in a very special environment. Where do they live?
Excellent! Calico crabs are adapted for life in the surf zone of sandy beaches. This is an area where the sand is constantly being shifted by waves. To live in that area, the Calico Crab has to have a very thin, light shell to let it swim in the surf. The thin shell means that it needs good camouflage, to avoid predators and hide from the animals it eats. The shells are so thin that it is rare to find a whole one. Usually, you only find bits.

do they live on beaches uder the sand in the ocean and the tides wash them up during hide tide and they feed??

Hola Senor Krampf,
We all think this is a very unique photo. The Calico crab might live underground so it can be more protected from predators. Otherwise, it might live in a coral reef underwater to camouflage itself. It probably uses its shell as protection.

Maybe they just live on land and don't live in water?
Do they live in coral reefs which is why they are so brightly coloured?
Are they jungle crabs?
