Krampf.com in the Classroom: Don't Show Your Students All of the Krampf.com Videos

Tablecloth

OK, now it may sound strange for me to tell you not to show videos to your students, but there is method in my madness. Think back to when you were in school. You probably had at least one science teacher that stands out. It was probably the one that did all the cool science tricks, and made science interesting. You can be that teacher. You SHOULD be that teacher. And it is easy to do.

Before you start showing the videos to your students, look through them and pick out some to hold back. For example, instead of showing your students "The Old Tablecloth Trick", watch it yourself and learn how to do it. Practice until you can do the demonstration. Then read the text version and make sure that you understand the science fully. Use the site as a training resource, instead of just a video site.

At a later date, you may wind up showing the video to your students, but you should notice a difference in the way that they react. Robert Krampf is doing the same demonstration that you did!

You can also dig through the hundreds of text experiments on the site for even more demo ideas. Almost all of them use common materials and are easy to master. Don't worry that you are stealing my ideas. After all, most of these demonstrations I learned from other science educators. Some of them have been around longer than I have.

The important thing is that by becoming "the cool science teacher" you can also become "the effective science teacher", making science interesting and understandable. That will put your students in the proper mindset for understanding the science instead of just memorizing it, and that "aha!" moment of understanding is a wonder-filled thing.

Once again, a on point post.

Once again, a on point post. Really happy I joined your blog a couple of weeks ago, and I would suggest that other folks now do the same. I'm sure, you won't regret it.

Once again, a timely post.

Once again, a timely post. So glad I registered for updates for your site a couple of weeks ago, and I would recommend that other Netizens right now do the same. I know, you will be back every week.

Showing the videos

Rob,
Thanks for including your explanation about how to use -- and not use the videos - I couldn't agree more. Let the students explore and discover the science concept on their own first! I recently did a dropper popper activty at a training to lead into a discussion of kinetic and potential energy and energy transfer. I followed up by replicating your demonstation with a basketball and tennis ball - then more discussion among the "students." After they all shared their ideas I showed them your video. It included a great explanation and the slow motion piece was really able to show how the basketball bounced less when it transfered some of its energy to the tennis ball. Thanks for coming to Brevard and sharing your great resources.
Ed

thankful

I recently went up to you at a teacher meeting in Brevard county and shook your hand for the work you do. I love your style, enjoy, and appreciate what you are doing. Keep up being the happy scientist, I want to be like you when I grow up. Mrs. C (4-5-6 grade science teacher)

Thank You!

I am a homeschooling Mom of 4 little scientists and I do not know what I would do without your emails and experiments! We love them- they are practical to do and easy to carry out and teach me more than the kids! Thank you so much for what you do! And keep it coming!

Vid-bits

These are short, science oriented videos that don't fit neatly into other categories. Many are just for fun, as I learn more about the world of video.
